The greatest command: to love God

The first thing about loving God (or anyone) is having the desire to want to spend time with them.  Love is incomplete with just feelings.  It must be accompanied with actions!  So, what are the activities I engage in to spend time with God?  I encounter Him in quiet time, prayer, journaling, reading how others have met Him, daily devotionals, worship, fasting, fellowship in small and big groups, reading scripture, and sharing Jesus with others.  These activities are traditionally known as the "disciplines" of the Christian faith

God does not command me to engage in these "disciplines".  I do them because I want to have a personal encounter with God.  If I was engaged in these activities for any other reason than love, I would question my motives for doing so.

I don't have encounters with Him so that I can be more spiritual, or to be more prosperous, or more secure, or gain power to perform miracles, or to get the things I want, or etc...  I do them to meet with Him.  He...is the prize!  He...is the treasure!  Truth is not an idea, truth is a person!  His name is Jesus!  I want to know Him and be known by Him.  It is so much easier to introduce Him to others when I know Him so well.

So, I had the opportunity to do just that a month ago.  I was having coffee with a Moroccan man at a coffee shop and after about an hour of visiting there was a pause in the conversation and then he asked me, "Can you explain Christianity to me?"  On the inside I was shouting, YES!

I used a technique called "The three circles of evangelism"  that summarizes God's plan in Creation, the Fall and Redemption.  It took just a few minutes and at the end I emphasized that Jesus rose from the dead and is alive and you can meet him.  He was surprised to hear that last sentence, but I assured him that Jesus made statements like in John 14:21... and I will love them and reveal myself to them.  He may give you a dream, a revelation or you could encounter him by reading the New Testament.  If you ask to meet him, he will make himself known to you.

It is good to know that bringing others to Christ is not based on my proficiency or expertise in sharing the Gospel.  My role is just to introduce people to Jesus.  I can share my testimony and answer questions to the best of my ability.  The rest is up to God!
