Devo Week 3 – Discerning the Unseen Realm
“Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.” Matt. 10:16 (ESV)
The God of All Nations – Another Look at Babel
With one common speech, the people at the Tower of Babel gathered to lift high their own name. The Trinity (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) took note of their mission, came down and confused their language. At that moment, their effort was demolished. Where they had unified for their own glory, God created diversity among them for His.
WHO IS FOR US:
Ever gathered with others thinking it was for one reason, only to discover it was really for another? I have. One quick way to discern the origin of a spiritual battle is to ask, “Who is receiving the glory or praise?” God or mankind? It’s good to assess the motive behind our gatherings. Their motive at Babel brought forth God’s judgment: a scattering through the confusion of their language. Simultaneously, however, God’s purposes triumphed with His blessing: the spreading of God’s name and fame through the multiplication of languages. Each people group began testifying of the event, using their own unique name for God. The promise of Habakkuk 2:14 -- that “the glory of God will fill the earth as the waters cover the sea” – started becoming a reality at Babel. Their unity (not uniformity) expressed in diversity brought increasing glory to God.
WHO IS AGAINST US:
God seeks to fill each people, language, tribe and nation with His glory and receive their praise (Rev. 7:9-10). The evil one, Satan, will do everything he can to stop this from happening. If he can’t stop it by enticing us into sin, he will seek to control us through the world’s system. At Babel, we can see the functioning of the first humanistic, unified system (known today as “globalism”) under the power of the god of this world. We can also see what God thought about it and how He responded.
PRAYER FOR SPIRITUAL BREAKTHROUGH
Father, open our hearts and minds to where You are moving to accomplish Your purposes. May we join in what You set into motion at Babel – the lifting high of Your name in every language and the spreading of Your praise and worship among all the peoples of the earth! Lord, expose the schemes of the enemy in our day that seek to undermine the manifestation of your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
