He Speaks Thrice

God is our refuge and strength,
    an ever-present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
    and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
Though its waters roar and foam
    and the mountains quake with their surging.

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God.
the holy place where the Most High dwells.
God is within her, she will not fall;
God will help her at break of day. (Psalm 46:1-5)

Dear Friends,
Sometimes God speaks once or twice. This week he spoke thrice. Maybe it’s easier for Jesus to get your attention but he obviously had to repeat Himself three times to get me to disentangle from tasks in order to hear Him. Three times this week, friends wrote me “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Psalm 46). Another translation says that He is “abundantly available for help.” I love that a scholar calls this psalm “a triumphant confession of fearless trust in God, though the continents break up and sink beneath the resurging waters of the seas.”*
This is currently the hardest season I am navigating where most of the things I relied on have given way. But even as the mountains fall, there is a River coursing through my heart to impart cheer and peace. Sometimes I lose that river but then it comes back often through friends making course corrections. We have our heavenly King within us and we cannot fail because every morning brings us our fresh Dawn of help.
Have you ever had a sturdy mountain that collapsed? (I come from Taiwan, a country with frequent landslides and earthquakes that carve and split mountains). If you are witnessing a mountain topple, may you experience that mighty glad River coursing through your heart, centering you in His Presence within, and that Dawn of help every morning. He never fails. So, you will not fall. In the midst of your circumstances, may you declare this psalm as your “triumphant confession of fearless trust in Jesus.”
If you have experienced His River of cheer and Dawn of help even as your mountain fell, I would love to hear about it and learn from your God-journey.
Be very blessed,
Mary

He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
    I will be exalted among the nations,
    I will be exalted in the earth.”
 (v.10)
