Art Imitates Life

The other day I had the privilege to be in the @zeitzmocaa contemporary art museum in Cape Town. I was standing in front of this large picture and had a déja vu as this girl looks so much like a girl in our community. I did remember her loneliness, fear and hopelessness as she had to go through challenging stuff and trauma. This week I did a house visit to another girl I know. I felt the same again in this house. People sitting in the room, looking at the television and just waiting for the day to pass. All energy in the room was focused to watch a violent series (little kids were in the room too) and the screaming of the actors was intense. When I took her out to speak I felt compassion towards her. A tiny little spark of joy & life came into her eyes when she talked about something she would love to do.

Looking back on my journey with young people in the community it was often the little seeds of connectedness in the day that brought change and healing in some of my young peoples’ lives. Time to listen. Time to sit down. Time to check in into their world. Time to just be and being part of their lives.
