Speed Bumps
We’ve all hit a speed bump too hard. We don’t see it in time to reduce our speed. The effects can really hurt! We are jolted abruptly. We might spill our coffee, bump our heads, become angry, guilty (“I should pay better attention.”) or embarrassed (“Was anyone watching?”). We may even need to make an appointment with a chiropractor or an automotive repair shop.
What are the speed bumps of life? The things that surprise us with a painful “jolt”? For many of us it may be the loss of a job, unexpected expenses, sickness or injury. Maybe it’s yet another cancellation or postponement. Disappointment hurts. Not being able to do what we had planned is frustrating. Not getting the things our heart desires is deeply disappointing.
Do you feel like you are in a stretch of speed bumps, that you’re not able to pick up speed and get where you’re hoping to go? It’s good to remember that speed bumps have a purpose in their design and placement. They are meant to slow us down, get us to pay attention so we will be safe or keep someone else safe.
The speed bump analogy is not a perfect one, but I think it is helpful. The Bible has given us some “Speed bump” messages:
“Be kind to one another.” John 13:35; Ephesians 4:32
“Be alert.” Mark 13: 33-37; 1 Corinthians 16:13; 1 Peter 5:8; Revelation 3:2
“Be still and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world.” Psalm 46:10
Keep a look out for life’s speed bumps. Slow down. Be safe. Be good to those around you. And be thankful.
