Serving the Lord's Purpose!

“Now when David had served God’s purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep” (Acts 13:36).

This verse has been tender in my heart this past week -- perhaps because my 99-year-old father-in-law just passed away (a few months shy of us celebrating his 100th birthday.) He was a kind prayerful man. He did not have a visible platform. He quietly helped plant a church and faithfully followed Jesus in all his decision-making. He left a legacy of faith and servanthood from which our generation to learn.

In the past two months, several saints dear to me have gone to be with Jesus. And we know that “precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His faithful servants” (Ps. 116:15). And while my heart mourns, the Holy Spirit has highlighted that it’s not so much how or when we die, it’s how we live. We are to live serving God’s purpose in our own generation. To know His purpose determines and shapes our decision making in every aspect of our lives. One of my favorite verses is “From the tribe of Issachar, there were 200 leaders...All these men understood the signs of the times and knew the best course for Israel to take” (I Chron. 12:32, NLT). These men discerned the season for their generation and therefore knew the course of action to take for their own lives, the people they led, and for the whole nation.

For me, serving the Lord’s purpose in my generation is to serve His mandate that “this Gospel of the Kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations (all peoples) and then the end will come" (Mt. 24:14).  In about ten years, we will celebrate 2000 years of Jesus entrusting the Great Commission to us. My small part is to inspire, empower and resource our frontline workers. They have the lion’s roar among the unreached. I have a whisper to encourage and serve. They risk their lives serving on the frontlines. I motivate from behind. But I get to, in my very small way, serve God’s purpose for my generation so that we can propel the Gospel of His reign, His Kingdom to all peoples so that He may return for His church.

Let us then, together, take time to inquire of Jesus, “How do you want me to serve Your purpose for my generation?”

Blessings,

Mary
