All Play
On this day at Burning Man, we woke up at 4am to catch the sunrise set of a DJ. Then, went to breakfast at 7am, Team Prayer at 8am, were serving Chai by 9am and were hosting the Drum Circle at 10am.
It was all play and play is good.
God LOVES when we play! That joyful laughter, that creativity, that carefree fun—it all brings delight to our Heavenly Father!
Remember when Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these" (Matthew 19:14)? Jesus doesn’t just tolerate our playfulness, He encourages it! In fact, He sees something heavenly in the way we let go and enjoy life with childlike wonder.
Think about it: as a parent, don’t you love watching your children laugh, explore, and enjoy the world around them? That’s exactly how God feels about you! Zephaniah 3:17 tells us, "The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in His love, He will no longer rebuke you but will rejoice over you with singing."
Play is good for us! Let’s be real—life can get serious. But play is where we find refreshment, creativity, and space to breathe. Proverbs 17:22 reminds us that “a joyful heart is good medicine.” Play helps us stay balanced and healthy, both physically and spiritually. It restores our souls, clears our minds, and helps us move our bodies.
Furthermore, play invites us to experience the freedom of being fully ourselves, embraced by God’s love. As we embrace play, we often find our relationship with the Father deepening in unexpected ways, because we’re imitating His creativity, power, freedom, and getting to know Him better because we are acting like Him. We are also taking risks and trusting and this builds our faith and trust in our Father.
Play is Good for others. When we play, we attract others to us! Playfulness draws people in, making them curious about the joy we carry. Think about how infectious laughter and lightheartedness are. We create opportunities to build friendships, foster community, and share our relationship with God through our joy.
Jesus tells us to “let your light shine before others” (Matthew 5:16), and our playfulness is part of that light. When we’re joyful and free, others are drawn to the peace and purpose we’ve found in Christ. By being playful, we reflect the abundance of life that God offers. It’s not just for us—it’s a powerful way to share His love with the world!
So, go ahead—laugh, create, and explore! Your joy in play is a reflection of God’s heart, a gift to your soul, and a blessing to others.
