The Build at Burning Man
Building the camp at Burning Man takes great effort. In total, the team hauled a large covered trailer, a trailer bed, four trucks, a van, a RV, and a pop-up RV. Every vessel was filled to the brim and ratchet straps secured the overflow. It took around two days for the team to arrive in Reno and then another day make our way to Burning Man.
There’s often traffic and a car line to get into Burning Man. The car line can take up to eight hours to get in and 12 hours to get out. It only took us around three hours to get in. It is wise to have ample water, food, and gas for the line. People often turn off their cars to conserve gas. Sometimes the heat and lack of AC can be challenging.
Once in, we waited to get placed. A member of Burning Man staff walks the perimeter of the lot so you know where to build your camp. By the time we got placed, the sun was setting. We worked until around 10pm that night and then we spent the next two days building the camp.
I included some time lapse videos and photos of the camp build in my blog. If you would like to see them, please fill out this short form. A little privacy helps keep our identities protected.
When I was 21, I was a full time missionary in Ecuador and led short term mission trips to tribal communities in the Amazon. This unique fulfillment of the Great Commission is more physically demanding.
The Burning Man team requires men. It needs their physical strength, hauling capabilities, building knowledge, tools, courage and security. The challenge is real, the survival of twenty people, and outreach to thousands in a desert wasteland. I have yet to see any other church ministry present such a real challenge for its men. I am delighted to be part of this ministry, and to see these men answer their call to go to the nations with the Good News.
