Counterfeit Wells
Every human heart carries a deep thirst for God. We were made for communion with the life and love of the Trinity.
“As the deer pants for streams of water,
so my soul pants for You, O God.
My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.”
— Psalm 42:1–2
But when that thirst is misdirected, it leads us to wells that cannot satisfy—counterfeit wells.
They shimmer with promise, but they hold no Living Water. The New Age movement is full of these wells.
The hunger is holy. The well is counterfeit.
Counterfeit Well #1: Identity — Horoscopes, Birth Charts, and Human Design
I hear it all the time ...
“I’m emotional because Mercury is in retrograde.”
“I’m an Aquarius — I flow like water.”
“I’m a Manifestor. I’m a Generator.”
It’s fascinating—each of these statements begins with “I am…” And when I hear them, my heart leaps. Because I know Who first said “I AM.”
YHWH.
The One who is existence itself. The Great I AM.
They want meaning—“Does my life fit into a cosmic story?”
They want belonging—“Is there a place where I am understood?”
And beneath all of it is a holy ache: the desire to be known and loved.
The Gospel Truth
Our identity is that we are children of a Father who loves us.
“You have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’” — Romans 8:15
“See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God.” — 1 John 3:1
“Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are Mine.” — Isaiah 43:1
We are His children. We belong to Him.
Building Bridges
Too often, we shut down conversations about new age topics out of fear. What if, instead, we asked questions and built bridges?
We could say:
“My life is part of a cosmic story too — written by the Creator of the universe.”
“You know who knows me better than anyone? The Father. The divine being who knit me in my mothers womb.”
“I see that you’re trying to find meaning and purpose — that’s a good desire. Can I tell you how I found mine?”
When we engage with love, we don’t affirm the counterfeit — we reveal the Living Water that satisfies the thirst behind it.
Counterfeit Well #2: Knowledge and Power — Tarot, Spirit Guides, Angel Numbers
I often hear,
“Can I pull a card for you?”
“My spirit guide told me…”
“The universe keeps showing me 11:11 — everything’s aligning!”
These practices promise wisdom and direction, they offer the illusion of control: “If I can read the signs, I can master my fate.”
But the truth is, we were never meant to control God — we were meant to listen and be guided by Him.
The Gospel Truth
God does want to guide us—directly, lovingly, personally.
“My sheep hear My voice.” — John 10:27
“If any of you lacks wisdom, ask God, who gives generously.” — James 1:5
He speaks through His Spirit, His Word, His people, and His peace. Scripture warns against divination not because God is stingy with guidance, but because counterfeit voices confuse and enslave. The fruit of God’s voice is always peace, purity, and love. The fruit of counterfeit guidance is confusion, fear, and pride.
“A tree is known by its fruit.” — Matthew 12:33
Building Bridges
Ask gentle questions:
“When you follow that guidance, does it lead to peace or chaos?”
“Has it brought you closer to love, or left you more anxious?”
“When I listen for God’s voice in prayer, I feel peace. I’ve learned He doesn’t hide—He leads.”
Counterfeit Well #3: Healing — Reiki, Energy Work, and Chakra Alignment
Healing can be a buzzword. People talk about trauma, shadow work, energy cleansing, and spiritual detox. They sense something’s broken—a fracture between body, mind, and soul.
And they’re right. We call it Original Sin.
That ache for healing is holy.
But true healing doesn’t come from manipulating energy—it comes from meeting the Healer.
The Gospel Truth
“Power came out from Him and healed them all.” — Luke 6:19
Jesus didn’t just teach about healing—He embodied it. He touched lepers, raised the dead, and restored hearts. He doesn’t send energy; He sends Himself.
The New Age world recognizes the wound of sin, but not the Savior who heals it. Only Jesus can reconcile what’s been torn—body, mind, and spirit.
Building Bridges
When someone talks about their healing journey, listen with compassion. Then gently ask: “Can I tell you about the Healer who changed my life?”
Share a story from Scripture—the hemorrhaging woman who reached out for Jesus’ robe and was instantly restored. Offer to pray with them.
The Living Water
In the end, every spiritual seeker is thirsty for the same thing:
Identity from the Father,
Wisdom and power from the Spirit, and
Healing from the Son.
Every counterfeit well—horoscopes, tarot, energy work—echoes a true longing that only Jesus can fulfill. The New Age world isn’t the enemy. It’s the mission field. We’re not called to build walls—we’re called to bring water. The woman at the well came searching for something temporary, and Jesus offered her something eternal:
“Whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst again.” — John 4:14
That’s what we offer, too. In the desert, in the dust, in our offices, schools, and gyms, every conversation with a seeker—we can point to the well that never runs dry.
