God’s goodness - Psalm 33

I heard a young man share his story, how a certain lady gave a word of knowledge to him as he was set to travel to a foreign country. Once he was there the Lord provided for him through his talents both for the work he did and a special gift from his employer. Once he got the money, the Lord impressed on him to tithe to the lady who had given him a word of knowledge and he obeyed. It took him two months to come back home and when he did; he took the tithe money to her. It happened that the previous day the lady had been to the doctor and she didn’t have the money to pay for her treatment and she told the doctor she would come back for her treatment at a later date. The money this man brought was just enough to care for her medical expenses.

It may seem like a coincidence but it is not. The Lord provided for both of his children. He provided hope to this man as he was traveling to a foreign country. He knew his fears of the unknown and knew that this word of knowledge would sustain him. He also knew that this lady would need to see a doctor and make payment for the same.

Truth is that in Psalm 33:14 “The Lord looks down from heaven and sees the whole human race. From his throne he observes all who live on the earth” (NLT). God knows you, He knows when you need a hug, He knows when you need peace, He knows when you need a conversation, He knows everything. Vs 15 “He made their hearts, so he understands everything they do.” (NLT)

God’s goodness and faithfulness is being experienced by his people everywhere. “Truly the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him, on those who hope in his steadfast love, to deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine.” Psalm 33:18-19 NRSV.

The past few years have been tough for many people with a pandemic, wars, droughts, and earthquakes among other experiences. Globally fuel and food prices have been on the rise. Yet in this famine the Lord has been faithful that we can afford to buy food, travel, fuel our cars, give generously. An ingenious way that I have seen God provide is through a friend's testimony: as the cost of food got too high for her and her family, she happened to get a temporary job in a certain hotel that offers its staff an opportunity to carry their leftover food home. This way the Lord is providing for her and her family!

It is so easy to see the difficulty, especially when prices change from day to day, but a different set of eyes is needed to look keenly and see how the Lord is sustaining us his children in this season. I write this to encourage you that our God is all-knowing and is never surprised by the happenings of this world. We have a choice on where to look. We can look up to God and believe in his providence for us or we can look to the world as every day more doom and gloom is echoed from the media creating fear in us.

Don’t get me wrong, the media reports the facts of the world, however we as believers know that even though we are in this world we are not of this world. God is first and foremost our source and this is His world. “The Lord merely spoke, and the heavens were created. He breathed the word, and all the stars were born. He assigned the sea its boundaries and locked the oceans in vast reservoirs. Let the whole world fear the Lord, and let everyone stand in awe of him. For when he spoke, the world began! It appeared at his command” Vs 6-7 (NLT) Let us not forget His greatness, let us not forget His majesty, let us not forget He is mighty.

As the Psalmist wrote: “Let the godly sing for joy to the Lord; it is fitting for the pure to praise him. Praise the Lord with melodies on the lyre; make music for him on the ten-stringed harp. Sing a new song of praise to him; play skillfully on the harp, and sing with joy. For the word of the Lord holds true, and we can trust everything he does. He loves whatever is just and good; the unfailing love of the Lord fills the earth.” Vs 1-3 (NLT) Sing, dance, praise, for it is well with His children.

Therefore let our hope be on the Lord and only Him. “We put our hope in the Lord. He is our help and our shield. In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name. Let your unfailing love surround us, Lord, for our hope is in you alone.” Vs 20-22 (NLT)

As we hope, I pray our ears will be attentive to Him, that we will obey His commands to love and be our sisters’ and brothers’ keepers. Is He asking you to reach out to someone? Is He asking you to give to someone? Is he asking you to pray? Our lives come full cycle with our obedience; as we partner with Christ then the ripple action of His goodness will multiply in this world. He’s got us.

Reflect

  1. Reflect and write how the LORD has sustained you in a year that you experienced famine.

  2. Share this with someone as the Lord leads

  3. Meditate on Psalm 33
