Incorporating God’s Promises in a Discovery Bible Study

The Discovery Bible Study (DBS) is a very important tool in bringing seekers for truth to a place where they know about Jesus and then become his followers. It also challenges them to become people who start new groups that follow Jesus. In this way whole movements can be started as one follower of Jesus tells others about how to follow Jesus and so forth.

The typical structure of a Discovery Bible Study is one which follows a simple process. First up, we read a passage and make sure that everybody understands what it means. Then three questions are asked: the first one is, “What does it say about Jesus?” the second is, “What does it say about people?” and the third is, “What does it tell us to do?” A major challenge at the end is teaching each person in the discussion to tell what they have learned to someone else.

In the area where we live, however, it is to be expected that many of the people that we disciple to Christ will undergo suffering. It is therefore necessary to prepare them for the hard times that are likely to happen. In our view a key ingredient in preparing people for persecution is to make them aware of the great and wonderful promises that we have in Jesus.

A promise like, “I will in no way leave you, neither will I in any way forsake you,” (Hebrews 13:5) can be of great comfort to a new believer in time of trouble.

To make provision for this, we have inserted a new question into our Bible studies, “What does God promise us in these verses?” We have added this as the third question, before “What does it tell us to do?”

We have found that every scripture that we have studied has a valuable promise. Spending a few minutes looking for God’s promises is of great value in giving our disciples hope even in dark situations.
