You Can't Rush Pastry

A pastry chef that I used to work for would always remind me that "you can't rush pastry". Bread will rise when it rises. The cake will bake when it bakes. The panna cotta will be set when it is set. Rushing or attempting to speed up the process will cause the quality of the finished product to suffer and often create more problems than just being short on time.

One of my tasks in that kitchen was to make daily croissants. The process to make one batch took 3 days and required participation from every shift. Layer by layer, day by day, we would carefully form, proof and bake. The finished product was worth it but we couldn't skip steps, we couldn't speed it up and we needed each other.

Like a perfectly flaky croissant transformation takes time and community. Spiritual formation is a lifelong process and as much as we may want to speed it up or do it on our own- if you can't rush pastry, you certainly can't rush sanctification. God loves us just as we are and he meets us there but he is too good to leave us there (As You Find Me, Hillsong). Jesus came that we may have life to the full (John 10:10) and in order to bring that fullness about we must be transformed so that we can live into the identity we were created for.

Much of what we are doing in this season- language learning, visa paperwork, making this place home, parenting young kids is difficult to navigate and takes time to figure out but it's worthwhile and important. So when we feel inadequate because we are constantly learning new things the Lord gently reminds us that we have misplaced our identity and when we feel weak because we are still trying to figure something out that used to be easy He reminds us to depend on Him because when we are weak He is strong.
