Jesus is a Person, Not a Concept
We were doing outreach in the Lounge—serving chai, creating space for connection, and inviting spiritual conversation—when I met Seraphim. I had seen her before in a yoga class and remembered being struck by her peaceful presence and inner strength. We hit it off immediately. Our conversation sparkled with curiosity and reverence as we talked about the divine. Before leaving, Seraphim invited me to join her at a sound healing session.
For those unfamiliar, sound healing is a form of somatic healing. It often involves breathwork, guided relaxation, and the vibrations of instruments played around you. Science tells us this shifts brain waves from an alert and working state to a relaxed and calm one—allowing stuck energy and emotions to flow and be released.
As a follower of Jesus and a missionary in New Age spaces, I’ve learned to be discerning: to embrace what is good and true, and to reject what leads us away from God. “Test everything; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil” (1 Thessalonians 5:21–22). I’ve come to see Sound Healing as a way of honoring the body’s God-given ability to heal. Just as our skin repairs itself after a wound, our nervous systems are designed to recover through rest, stillness, and peace. “He makes me lie down in green pastures… He restores my soul” (Psalm 23:2–3).
When grounded in the truth of God’s creation, somatic practices like breathwork and sound can be received as reflections of His design.
However, not all spiritual practices are rooted in God’s truth. We must remain vigilant, as Scripture warns: “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God” (1 John 4:1). Practices like tarot readings or chakra alignments, which invite spiritual forces not of Christ, are counterfeit expressions of the divine. They do not lead to the true freedom found in Jesus, but often to greater confusion and bondage.
I stepped into the room expecting crystals and statues of Ganesha. Instead, I was greeted by an icon of Jesus, a painting of the saints in Heaven, an altar, a small tabernacle, an Easter candle. I had entered what looked and felt like a “Catholic” sacred space.
I was surprised—and honestly, a little confused.
After the session, I looked up their website. What I found online was disturbing. The space hosted events blending tarot card readings with Bible study. Classes for chakra alignment, next to "first communion" class. Lectures on Christ consciousness, and this Holy Week—a “celebration of the divine energy of the Eucharist.”
This was deception.
Just two days later, I went to an event at Church - Stations of the Cross, followed by Praise and Worship and Eucharistic Adoration. And there, kneeling before the true presence of Christ—Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity—It was so clear what sets our God apart from all the other so-called gods.
Our God became man. “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us” (John 1:14). Jesus entered into human history—not as an abstract force or mystical energy, but as a real person, fully God and fully man. He came to meet us in our humanity, to reveal the face of the Father, and to lead us back to Him (CCC 458–460). No New Age deity has taken on flesh. No spirit guide has borne a cross.
Jesus is not one among many. “At the name of Jesus every knee should bow… and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Philippians 2:10–11). He is the Name above all names.
He is Emmanuel—God with us (Matthew 1:23).
And not only did He come—He stays.
At the Last Supper, Jesus instituted the Eucharist, saying, “This is my Body… this is my Blood… Do this in remembrance of me” (Luke 22:19–20). The Church teaches that in the Holy Eucharist, Jesus Christ is truly, really, and substantially present: Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity (CCC 1374). This is not a metaphor. This is not “divine energy.” It is the very Person of Jesus, alive in the Blessed Sacrament.
These are the truths I now cling to with deeper gratitude. The faith I was raised in is a treasure—rich in truth, grace, and power. And it’s precisely these sacred distinctions that we must gently, boldly, and lovingly share with our brothers and sisters in the New Age.
Because Christ is not a concept—He is a Person.
And He came to save.
And He is sending us as "his hands and feet" (Matthew 25: 34 - 40) to the lounge, to Seraphim, to New Ages spaces to proclaim the Good News.
